Art Library

If you're a beginning painter and don't know where to start, here are few books I've found helpful over the years. Whether you are painting portraits, landscapes, or still life, the basic principles of virtually any medium can be applied. There are hidden gems in each book!

Seeing the Light: An Artist's Guide by Betty Carr
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards
Daily Painting by Carol Marine
Basic Still Life Techniques by Rachel Wolf
Landscape Painting by Mitchell Albala
Classical Still Life Painting by Jane Jones
Landscape Painting Inside & Out by Kevin Macpherson

Portrait Painting:

Portraits from Life in 29 Steps by John Howard Sanden
Painting Beautiful Skin Tones with Color and Light by Chris Saper
Color Mixing Recipes For Portraits by William F. Powell

Color Palette and Design Ideas:

Pattern + Palette Sourcebook -- Compiled by Anvil Graphic Design, Inc., this book is "A complete guide to choosing the perfect color and pattern in design".  The pages contain five design blocks with harmonious color combinations for each sample. The categories include: Fashion, Pop, Deco, Asian, Natural, and Industrial. Place it next to your easel and match paint colors with ease.

Artists Helping Artists

Rather than playing music while painting, I will often listen to the online show, "Artists Helping Artists" on Talented California artist, Leslie Saeta generously hosts this (free) show every week! It is filled with fresh new topics, beneficial to both beginning and professional painters. Hear interviews with artists across America, learn about new painting products, and explore the technical aspects of running an art business. Gain motivation and so much more!
